Running cadence: find your rhythm.
Running cadence is the number of steps you take per minute, counting both feet. A running metronome gives you a steady rhythm to follow while you practice your chosen cadence.
Cadence, pace and heart rate: what is the difference?
- Cadence: steps per minute (SPM). At 170 SPM, you take 170 steps in one minute in total.
- Pace: how long it takes to cover a distance. The same pace can be run with different combinations of step length and cadence.
- Heart rate: heartbeats per minute. This is a separate measurement from your step rhythm.
How to use a running metronome in ZoneBeat
- Place your iPhone or iPad where the screen is easy to see during your treadmill run. You can use the metronome without connecting a heart-rate sensor.
- Choose your target steps per minute. This is the rhythm you want to follow, not a measurement of your actual cadence.
- Choose a cue for every step or every second step. At a target of 170 SPM, that means 170 cues per minute or 85 cues for the same foot. The target cadence stays 170 SPM.
- Follow the visual rhythm, with optional quiet clicks. Use plus and minus on the training screen to adjust your target without opening Settings.

Is 180 the best running cadence?
ZoneBeat does not prescribe a universal target. The 170 SPM shown in our preview is an example, not a recommendation for everyone. You choose the rhythm; the app helps you follow it.
Research has studied changes relative to runners’ preferred cadence. That does not establish one ideal number or a promise of faster running or fewer injuries. Read the research and its limitations.
Does ZoneBeat measure running cadence?
No. ZoneBeat is a visual running metronome with optional sound. It guides a target cadence; it does not count your steps, measure pace or track distance. Optional heart rate comes from a compatible Bluetooth sensor.
Can I use it with music or video?
Metronome clicks can mix with audio from other apps when those apps allow it. Supported video services can show Picture in Picture over ZoneBeat. Keep your rhythm and optional heart-rate zones on the training screen.
